GRA Nigeria: Managing Grazing Reserves for Peace and Development
Grazing Reserves Administration (GRA)
Established in 2009 under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, GRA Nigeria addresses the persistent farmer-herder conflicts by managing grazing resources.
Core Mandates
- Develop & Manage Grazing Reserves: Identify, acquire, and develop land with water points, veterinary clinics, and access roads for pastoralists.
- Delimit & Manage Stock Routes: Designate and keep clear livestock migration corridors; prevent encroachment.
- Promote Peaceful Coexistence: Facilitate dialogue, negotiation, and conflict resolution between herders and farmers.
- Livestock Development: Provide training, vaccination, disease control, and breeding programs to boost productivity.
- State Collaboration: Work with state governments on local grazing policies and reserve management.
GRA aims to secure livelihoods, reduce violence, and enhance national food security through structured pastoralism.
