Why would the disruption of trade destroy Ghana power?

Ghana was a medieval kingdom that existed in what is now southern Mauritania and Mali. Its prosperity was based to a large extent on its monopoly (albeit a shared one, with Mali) on West African gold supplies and also in part on control of trans-Saharan trade. Thus the disruption of trans-Saharan trade would probably have severely damaged or even destroyed, the Kingdom of Ghana.
