Family Activities in Langley Township, British Columbia

The Hudson Bay Company opened its Fort Langley fur trading post here in 1827, giving the Langley area its proud claim as "The Birthplace of British Columbia." The community boomed throughout the 19th century with the railroad, forestry, agriculture and a nearby gold rush or two bringing prosperity. Today, Langley and Langley Township are a picturesque part of Greater Vancouver, on the city's south side, offering plenty of opportunities for family fun.
  1. Historic Sites

    • Historic Fort Langley remains in existence today as a small town-within-a-town. It's full of attractions like the old fur trading post, now a fully restored National Historic Site.

Other points of interest include the Langley Centennial Museum, Heritage CN Rail Station Museum with its vintage rail cars, and the BC Farm Machinery and Agricultural Museum, displaying steam tractors and antique farming implements.

The old town itself is filled with gracious private homes and public buildings, many of them now housing shops and eateries.

    Parks

    • Campbell Valley Regional Park's hills and valleys offer hiking and riding trails for outdoor fun, and Langley also calls itself the "Horse Capitol of BC." Brae Island Park has interpretive trails and offers bicycle, canoe and kayak rentals, while Derby Reach Park marks the beginning of the Fort-to-Fort trail that winds from the trading post's original 1827 location to the current 1839 one.

Langley also has a number of municipal parks with a range of family-oriented facilities including water parks and playgrounds.

    Zoo

    • Children love animals and Langley Township is home to the Greater Vancouver Zoo, the largest in the province. It boasts over 135 species of animals in a variety of habitats. The Safari Adventure mini-train makes a circuit around the facility, while the bus tour (take them separately or together) goes right through some of the enclosures.

Quadra-cycles are also available for rent, making three ways to get around the zoo without tiring out your little ones. The area is also home to the Mountainview Conservation and Breeding Center, which helps preserve some of Canada's most endangered species. Tours must be arranged in advance.

    Other Attractions

    • The Canadian Museum of Flight is located at Langley Municipal Airport. Its collection ranges from a World War I Sopwith Camel replica to the Mach 2 Lockheed Starfighter, and a number of Depression-era aircraft are maintained in flying condition.

A completely different day trip is Aldor Acres Farm, which offers hayrides, a tour of the dairy farm, where children can meet the calves, milk a cow and make butter, as well as seasonal pumpkin and Christmas tree festivals.
