Syracuse Family Activities

Syracuse, New York is a metropolitan hub of central New York that is rich in history. First inhabited by the Iroquois and Mohawk Indians, it became industrialized by the production of salt and the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. Today, Syracuse offers families a myriad of historical, cultural and sport activities mixed with musical entertainment, shopping, dining and sight-seeing. The city is also home to several festivals and fairs throughout the year.
  1. Museums

    • The Everson Museum of Art (everson.org) houses over 11,000 paintings, ceramics, sculptures, photos and ceramics in its permanent collection, which it has accumulated in more than 100 years of being open. It focuses on American art, and features the work of many regional artists. Everson offers family programs with hands-on art and music projects and scavenger hunts. Art Zone is located on the first floor and offers families the opportunity to create various art projects including ceramics, portraits and games. For science buffs, head over to Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (most.org) to explore a life-like cave and coral reef, dig for fossils, find your way out of a giant maze and obstacle course at 'Playhouse Science' and walk through giant replicas of human organs.

    Clinton Square

    • In the heart of downtown Syracuse lies Clinton Square where a variety of events including festivals, walking historical tours, holiday events and winter ice skating take place. Additionally, Clinton Square harbors several hotels and restaurants and is a popular destination for shopping, live entertainment and dining.

    Sports

    • Get active at The Central New York Family Sports Centre (cnyfamilysportscentre.com) where families go to play in organized adult and youth sports like soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey and softball. Indoor and outdoor fields are also available for rent to families who want to organize their own sport tournaments. Four Seasons Golf and Ski Center (fourseasonsgolfandski.com) is worth a visit no matter the season. Winter sports like skiing, snowtubing and snowboarding are offered with lessons for novices. During the warmer months families can golf, play soccer, visit the batting cages and play mini-golf. Visit the Carrier Dome (suathletics.com), Syracuse University's 50,000 seat stadium located on the campus and home to Syracuse University's football, basketball and lacrosse teams.

    Fairs and Festivals

    • Syracuse hosts several annual family friendly festivals. North Syracuse Family Festival is held over the Memorial Day weekend and features musical entertainment, bounce houses, face painting and arts and crafts. Syracuse is also home to the New York State Fairgrounds (nysfair.org) where the Great New York State Fair is held at the end of summer.
