Family Night Activities in New York

There is so much do in New York City. With so many landmarks, museums and restaurants to enjoy, a vacation there can become a tiring whirlwind. While there are plenty of things to do during the day to occupy your family, such as the Bronx Zoo, Central Park and the Empire State Building, what about something to do in the evening?

  1. Broadway Musicals

    • Broadway is almost synonymous with New York City, and taking your family to a musical or play is a great activity in the evening. Of course, with so many shows available, it is difficult to decide what to see. Do you catch a venerable favorite such as "Phantom of the Opera" or opt for something newer and edgier? Among the most popular shows for families are "Lion King," "Hairspray" and "Wicked." You can obtain tickets at the theater's box office, but most often the popular shows are sold out in advance. You can also visit the TKTS booths--located in Times Square, South Street Seaport and Downtown Brooklyn--on the day of the show for discounted tickets.

    Magic Show

    • The Chamber Magic show, located at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, happens every Friday and Saturday night. There are two performances, one at 7 p.m. and the other at 9 p.m. Featuring Steve Cohen, the Millionaires' Magician, the Chamber Magic show is one of New York City's hottest acts. In the show, Cohen attempts to re-create the feeling of a 19th century parlor performance as he performs sleight of hand tricks and reads minds. Tickets to the critically lauded show are not cheap. The price is $70 per person, unless you want to sit in the front row, which will run you $100 per ticket.

    Times Square

    • Times Square, another iconic place in New York, comes to life in the evening. All of its signs are lit up, and at Christmas it is filled with people caroling and shopping. Though it can be a bit hectic, Times Square offers great shops and restaurants to enjoy in the evening. It is also home to two major movie cinemas, the Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood. Among its more famous signs are the Coca-Cola sign and Budweiser sign that light up in the evening. Many of Broadway's musicals are located just off Times Square, so taking a stroll afterward requires minimal transportation.
