Philadelphia Family Activities

Downtown Philadelphia is home to many family activities and attractions. One of the United State's national Mints is located here and hosts free tours for visitors of all ages. Other family activities include nature exploration, and science and discovery museums. The Philadelphia Zoo is a popular family destination but don't miss out on the expansive and educational aquarium in downtown Philadelphia. Learn about food and growing plants at the local Children's Garden.
  1. United States Mint

    • Tours of this national facility are free and self guided. According to the mint's website, guests of all ages will enjoy and remember this experience forever. Tours provide extensive information on both the history of the Philadelphia Mint and its current minting processes. Guests will see original coin designs and the actual striking of the coins. All adult visitors of the facility will need to provide photo identification upon entering. The mint is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on federal holidays.

    Please Touch Museum

    • The Please Touch Museum is 38,000 square feet of family discovery. Six interactive zones provide activities. City Capers is a child-sized urban center complete with supermarket, businesses, neighborhoods and vehicles. Flight Fantasy lets the kids operate their own flying machine and play hop-scotch in the clouds. Wonderland is a magical realm of mazes, pools of tears, unusual characters and challenging riddles. The Museum is located in Fairmount Park in downtown Philadelphia. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Adventure Aquarium

    • Take the whole family to Philadelphia's Adventure Aquarium. Hippopotamuses, giant sting rays, sharks, birds and other sea life are cared for at the aquarium. The Jules Verne Gallery has deep sea inhabitants like glowing jellyfish, giant spider crabs and a giant Pacific octopus. Rainforest Rendezvous is a tropical wildlife exhibit with opossums, chinchillas, diamond back terrapins and a 6-foot-long boa constrictor. The aquarium is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Camden Children's Garden

    • Experience the amazement of the Camden Children's Garden.

      This four-acre nature discovery center is a Philadelphia haven for families and children. A carousel, butterfly ride, dinosaur garden and fairy garden will enchant the kids. The picnic garden is literally edible. Visitors may pick their vegetables out of giant planters shaped like cups and bowls placed on an enormous picnic blanket. The Arrow River Train takes kids on a train ride through a miniaturized landscaped garden. The Garden is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
