Family Activities in Omaha

Stretched out on the Missouri River and with a population (at the time of publication) of nearly half a million people, Omaha offers a wealth of possibilities for families in search of either educational or recreational activities. This Midwestern city is also site of amusements parks, stage theaters and movie theaters.
  1. Outdoor Recreation

    • Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo (omahazoo.com) offers many family-oriented activities. Besides offering train rides and a sky lift over the grounds of the zoo, Henry Doorly offers day camps that allow children to learn about the lives of animals. For the more adventurous family, Omaha is the location for the Adventure Sports Laser Tag (no website; 4089 S. 84th St. Omaha, Nebraska 68127-1701 +1 402 319 8858) facility and the Husker Paintball (huskerpaintball.com) facility. Other places with outdoor activities in Omaha include the 31-acre Heartland of America Park, a public park located downtown, and the Boulder Creek Amusement Park (bouldercreekminigolf.net), which has Omaha's largest miniature golf facility.

    Theaters

    • Built in 1927, the Orpheum Theater (omahaperformingarts.org) presents many large-scale Broadway productions suitable for the entire family. Some performances as of 2011 include "Wicked" and "Les Miserables." Another playhouse in Omaha is The Rose (rosetheater.org), the third largest professional children's theater in the nation. The Rose offers drama classes for kids as well as performances of classics such as "The Sound of Music" and "The Nutcracker."

    Museums

    • A number of museums in Omaha offer educational activities suitable for the entire family. For instance, the Omaha Children's Museum (ocm.org) has 45,000 square feet of exhibit space. Permanent exhibits include: the Charlie Campbell Science and Technology Center as well as the Imagination Playground, which is especially designed for younger children. The Durham Western Museum (durhammuseum.org) contains exhibits that detail the history of 19th century westward expansion in the U.S.

    Movie Theaters

    • Omaha is the site of a number of multiplex theaters. Some of the chains that have locations in Omaha are Rave Pictures (ravemotionpictures.com) and AMC Theatres (amctheatres.com). The Omaha Zoo features an IMAX theater that shows animal documentaries.
