Pemba, Mozambique Tourism

Situated on the world's third largest bay, Pemba offers warm waters, sandy beaches and a pleasant tropical climate. Wimbe Beach, 5 km (about three miles) from town, is the primary destination for tourists to the area. Visitors willing to venture further out can take the three-hour drive to Quirimbas National Park, which offers wild life and bush camps.

    • Wimbe Beach features luxury resorts with shops, restaurants and a nightclub. Traditional Makonde crafts are available in many of the shops. Tourists seeking a more traditional shopping experience can go to Mbanguia market, Pemba's largest. The busy market offers a vast array of merchandise, from housewares to live chickens. Tranquil Ibo Island is a short flight from Pemba and contains 16th century ruins.

    Recreation

    • Water sport enthusiasts will find every activity imaginable at Wimbe Beach. The large bay is a popular place for sailing, boating and diving. Water vessel rentals are available at the beach, including kayaks, canoes and paddle boats. Nearby Murrebue Beach is a kite-surfing hot spot. Fishermen can troll the waters for sailfish, mackerel and yellow-fin.

    • Pemba has two luxury resorts, the Londo Lodge and the Pemba Beach Hotel and Spa. Budget lodging is available at Pieter Diver's Place, Complexo Turistico Caracol and the Residencial Wimbe Sun. Pemba Dive and Bush Camp offers campsites, chalets and bungalows.
