- Ajaokuta-Itakpe: Located in Kogi state, the Ajaokuta-Itakpe diamond deposit is one of the most promising diamond fields in the country. It is a primary diamond deposit, meaning the diamonds are found within the kimberlite pipes that formed them. The diamonds here are typically of excellent quality and have a high value in the international market.
- Jos Plateau: The Jos Plateau in central Nigeria is another significant diamond-producing region. The diamonds in this area are found in alluvial deposits, which are formed when diamond-bearing rocks are weathered and the diamonds are transported by water. The Jos Plateau is known for producing high-quality diamonds, including rare fancy-coloured diamonds such as pink and yellow.
- Sokoto-Zamfara: The Sokoto-Zamfara region in northwestern Nigeria is another important diamond-producing area. The diamonds in this region are primarily found in alluvial deposits and are generally smaller in size compared to those from Ajaokuta-Itakpe. However, the diamonds from this area are still of good quality and contribute significantly to Nigeria's diamond production.
- Bauchi State: Bauchi State, located in northeastern Nigeria, is also known for diamond occurrences. Diamonds have been found in alluvial deposits in several areas of the state. Exploration and mining activities are ongoing in the region to further assess the potential of these diamond deposits.
- Other Areas: In addition to these major sites, there are other localities in Nigeria where diamonds have been found. These include areas in Benue State, Cross River State, and Ebonyi State. However, the commercial viability and extent of these occurrences are yet to be fully explored and developed.
