Why was Johannesburg named the city of gold?

Johannesburg was not named the city of gold, this is a common misconception. The name Johannesburg is believed to be a combination of the Dutch word "Johannes", meaning "John" or "Johannesburg" and the Afrikaans word "burg", meaning "town" or "city". Thus, the name Johannesburg translates to "Johannes' town" or "Johannes' city".
