Some reasons why trade was important to Mali:
Gold & Salt Trade: Mali was renowned for its abundance of gold and the important West African salt mines within its territory. Gold and salt were highly valued commodities for trade in the region and beyond, and Mali monopolized the trans-Saharan trade of these valuable resources. Mali could export gold to the Mediterranean world and receive luxury items like silk and horses in return.
Slaves: The trans-Saharan trade also involved the trade of slaves. By controlling this lucrative trade, Mali gained significant economic profits.
Taxation of Trade: Mali could leverage its location to tax the vast trade caravans that passed through its territory, generating substantial revenues for the kingdom.
Merchants & Middlemen: The development of trade within the empire encouraged the growth of a wealthy class of merchants who acted as middlemen between local producers and foreign buyers. Mali’s leaders, through taxation of these merchants, could secure a regular source of income.
