Cairo is connected by air with many major cities in Europe, Asia and Africa. Thoroughly modern Cairo International Airport is Egypt's most important air hub. Delta Airlines currently flies there from New York. Egypt Air, the country's national carrier, flies from every major city in North Africa, the Middle East and Europe. England and Rome are the most popular departure cities for flights to Cairo.
Egypt Air offers the most promotions and discounts. For travelers from the United States and United Kingdom, the easiest way to get to Cairo is via one of the 15 weekly flights offered by the airline between London and Cairo. Major airlines KLM and Lufthansa also have regular service. Travel agents and Internet booking sites often offer packages that rely on multiple airlines. Travelers from the U.S. can fly to Europe on one airline and transfer to Egypt Air for the last leg of their journey. This is often the cheapest way to travel, with fares sometimes as low as $800 round trip. The best options include flying Emirates through Dubai and British Airways through London.
Regional airlines and low-cost-carriers in North Africa and the Middle East have the cheapest fares to Cairo. However, for those who do not live in these regions, it is often too expensive to book a connecting flight that will help you take advantage of the low prices. That said, Saudi Arabian Airlines and El Al Airlines have regular flights into Cairo from Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Because Cairo is the country's only major air hub, there aren't many deals to be found by travelers flying into secondary airports. However, Air Cairo regularly connects Cairo with the tourist haven of Luxor. Several international flights and chartered aircraft land daily at Luxor Airport. Air Egypt and Air Cairo both offer reasonably-priced connections to Cairo.
Cairo International Airport is connected with the city via three major roadways. Shuttle bus service and airport express bus service are offered outside Terminal 1. Terminal 1 is connected with the other terminals via free shuttle bus. Taxis can be quite expensive. A rail line is in the works. It is scheduled to be completed by 2013.
