How do people use the land in Japan?

Japan is a small country with a population of over 127 million people, so the land is used very intensively. Around 16% of the land is used for agriculture, with rice being the main crop, although wheat, barley, soybeans, vegetables, and fruits are also grown. Around 70% of the land is covered in forest, although much of this is used for timber, and only a small area is kept as protected forest. As Japan is very mountainous, only 13% of the land is urban. The population is concentrated in a few large cities, with around 14% of the population of Japan living in Greater Tokyo.
