The nationalist Chinese occupy the island of Taiwan. Taiwan is an island located off the coast of mainland China. It is the largest island in East Asia and is densely populated. Taiwan has been inhabited for thousands of years and has been ruled by various empires and countries throughout its history. In the late 1600s, the Ming dynasty collapsed and was replaced by the Qing dynasty. The Qing dynasty ruled over China for nearly 300 years. In 1895, Japan defeated China in the First Sino-Japanese War and took control of Taiwan. Japan ruled Taiwan until the end of World War II. After World War II, Taiwan was returned to China. However, the Chinese Civil War broke out shortly after and the nationalist Chinese were defeated by the communists. The nationalist Chinese fled to Taiwan and established a government there. Taiwan has been ruled by the nationalist Chinese ever since.
