China and Vietnamese Assimilation: A Historical Correction

The premise is incorrect. Vietnam was under Chinese rule for roughly a millennium (111 BCE – 939 CE), with brief interruptions. After gaining autonomy in 939 CE, Vietnam fought several wars against Chinese dynasties over the next thousand years, resulting in border changes that persist today. China did not fully assimilate the Vietnamese, but the relationship was complex, not a simple failure of assimilation.
