Central Asia's Landlocked Nations

None of the five Central Asian countries have direct access to the ocean. All are completely landlocked, meaning their territory does not border any sea or ocean.

The Five Central Asian Countries

  • Kazakhstan - World's largest landlocked country
  • Kyrgyzstan - Mountainous, entirely landlocked
  • Tajikistan - Mountainous, entirely landlocked
  • Turkmenistan - Borders the Caspian Sea (an inland body of water, not an ocean)
  • Uzbekistan - One of only two doubly landlocked countries worldwide (surrounded entirely by other landlocked countries)

Implications

This geographic reality significantly impacts the region's economics and geopolitics:

  • Dependence on neighboring countries' ports for international trade
  • Higher transportation costs for imports and exports
  • Vulnerability to transit disputes and border closures
  • Strategic importance of pipeline routes for energy exports
  • Focus on regional cooperation initiatives like the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route

While Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan border the Caspian Sea—the world's largest inland body of water—this provides only limited maritime access and does not connect to the global ocean system. The region's landlocked status remains a defining feature of its development challenges and foreign policy priorities.
