Why Belarus Doesn't Produce Rice
- Climate: Temperate continental; too cold for rice (requires 20–35°C growing season)
- Geography: Landlocked; no tropical/subtropical zones
- Soil: Podzolic/loamy; not suited for paddy cultivation
- Agriculture focus: Grains (wheat, barley, rye), potatoes, flax, sugar beets, dairy
Vietnam & Bangladesh: Rice Powerhouses
- Vietnam: Mekong & Red River Deltas; 2–3 crops/year; #2 exporter globally
- Bangladesh: Floodplain agriculture; near self-sufficiency; #3 producer
- Both: Monsoon climate, abundant labor, Green Revolution varieties, irrigation investment
Belarus excels in potatoes (#5 globally), flax, rye, and dairy—but rice requires a fundamentally different agroecology.
