Could Southeast Asia be described as a site of Western European colonization?

While some areas in Southeast Asia experienced periods of Western European colonization, it would not be entirely accurate to describe the entire region as such. Southeast Asia is incredibly diverse in terms of its history and the political influences throughout its territories. European exploration of Southeast Asia occurred primarily during the Age of Exploration (16th to 18th centuries), leading to colonial control by various European powers in different parts of the region, often overlapping with local kingdoms and societies. Some of the colonizing powers in Southeast Asia included: Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Colonization brought political, economic, social, and cultural transformations to several areas, but experiences across the region varied. Therefore, it is essential to recognize these nuanced differences among nations within Southeast Asia.
