Aceh is the only kingdom in Southeast Asia that was a both Muslim and matrilineal society. Islam entered Aceh in the early 13th century through Arab and Indian traders, and by the end of the century the kingdom had converted. Aceh then became one of the centres of Islamic propagation in Southeast Asia. As for the matrilineal system, it means the descent and inheritance of property were traced through the female line.
