In the state of Madya Pradesh, 20 temples remain of the original 85 built between 950 and 1050 A.D. during the Chandela Dynasty. Named after the date palm tree, Khajur, the Khajuraho temples are internationally known for the erotic sculptures that decorate their walls. Based on the theme of woman, the architectural work in these temples is incredibly intricate and reflects the high level of skill of the original artisans. The temples are grouped into three sections: Western, Eastern and Southern.
The Sun Temple of Konark was built in A.D. 1250 and was meant to enshrine the image of Sun, the patron deity of Konark. The temple is in the shape of a giant chariot with 12 wheels, pulled by seven horses that carry the sun God, Surya, across the sky. It is representative of Orissan architecture from the ancient Kalinga era. The Temple complex is formed following the chariot design.
A Sikh gathering place for worship, the Golden Temple is located in Amritsar, which means Pool of Nectar. It gets its name after the holy pool of water surrounding the temple. The temple was built in 1588 and the foundation was laid by a Muslim saint. Connected by a marble bridge, the temple is covered in gold foil, hence the name. The architecture is considered a blend between the Muslims and the Hindus. Entrances on all four sides demonstrate receptivity to the worship of individuals from all Indian castes and beliefs.
Located in Tamilnadu in southern India, Madurai is one of the most important sites for Hindu pilgrimages. Legends purport that this is the home of warrior princesses and a place where gods fell in love and their promises are manifest. Madurai was originally called Madharapuran, after the madhu (honey) purported to have dripped off the hair of the Shiva here. Nayaks built several famous temples in the 16th century.
