Bali Travel Tips

Though the island of Bali, located in the archipelago of Indonesia, is small, you will never find yourself with a lack things to do. Visitors can relax on pristine beaches, view rice terraces, watch ceremonies at local temples or take in a dance performance. If you like food, visit the cafes at Ubud, or if you want some peace and quiet, go to the car-free paradise of Nusa Lembongan. Visit a museum or lounge at a resort--there is so much to do on this small island!
  1. Getting There

    • Most visitors will come to Bali via plane. Its airport, Ngurah Rai Airport, is located just south of Kuta. Among the international carriers that service Bali are Continental Airlines, Quantas Airways and Japan Airlines. Domestic flights from other islands in Indonesia can be quite inexpensive. Another option is to take the ferry service from other points. Taking a bus from Jakarta is not really feasible since airline costs are so low.

    Getting Around

    • The best way to get around Bali is either renting your own car or bike or hiring a driver. Many of the best places are inaccessible via public transportation, and with your own vehicle you can visit these highlights. If you must take public transport, keep in mind that even though it is cheap, it can make for long journeys. Some of the more expensive hotels and restaurants will provide you with free shuttle service. Keep in mind that if you rent a car in Bali, you should have an International Driving Permit.

    Other Information

    • Though Bali has some political troubles, it is a fairly safe place to visit. If you are concerned, go with an international chain hotel which have the best security. It is important to check travel advisories before booking a trip to Bali. It is also important to refrain from using illegal drugs, as Bali has serious penalties such as extended jail time.
