Instructions

    • 1

Search for positions to apply for on websites such as ELS Jobs in China or Abroad china.org.

    • 2

Determine what qualifications are needed for a specific job. Some schools require a bachelor's degree while others require a master's in teaching. Some require only that you are a native English speaker.

    • 3

Examine the terms of the contract to find out how long the contract is for, when it begins and ends, and what is covered by the company. Companies generally pay a salary and an allowance for food, lodging and gas.

    • 4

Fill out a Visa Notification Letter, along with the Letter of Invitation sent to you by your employer and submit them with two passport sized photos to the Chinese consulate closest to you. Allow them to review the letter and issue you a work visa. Plan on four days' time for processing.

    • 5

Purchase a one way ticket to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (called CAN) in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, a week before your contract begins. The travel time is around 26 hours from the west coast of the United States. Also research what buses or trains go to the town where you will be working.

    • 6

Print out a copy of the Chinese government issued Employment Permit signed by your employer, which will be sent to you.

    • 7

Ensure that your passport and work visa are in order. Pack to suit the weather and customs in China.

    • 8

Apply for a Temporary Residence Permit at the local Chinese government office close to where you work after you arrive. This must be done within 30 days after your arrival; it replaces your work visa which expires a month after your arrival.
