Earn a TEFL/ TEFOL certification to teach English to native speakers of other languages. Most jobs will require that you are TEFL certified. These certification courses train teachers in the best methods in teaching students where English is not their first language. Certification courses can be taken in class or online. In-class courses can cost between $600 to $1,500. Online courses cost between $200 to $600.
Put together a resume. A resume or a CV will be required with the job application for most of the positions. Outline experience that you have working with students (even if it is not TEFL related) and note what certification you have, what school you gained your certification from, and how many hours was your certification course.
Search for a position. Positions can be found through several different online search engines. Remember that many different American websites will not refer to Torino, which is the Italian name, so also search for Turin, the English name of the city.
Contact your regional consulate or consulate services center. This center will help you complete the work visa application form. They will also help you with understanding what visa you are going to apply for. There are two visa options for citizens not of the Schengen region who wish to work in Italy: a Working Holiday visa, or a Schengen work visa (this is the only option for Americans). Which visa you will apply for will depend on the position you have been offered and how long you plan on staying in Italy. Requirements to complete the visa application process are: Complete the appropriate application form, a current passport, and proof of a job contract. Additional information may be needed depending on the consulate.
Familiarize yourself with the terms of your employment contract. In Torino, Italy, if you are being paid an hourly wage, it should be around €12 per hour. Teaching hours are normally between 25-35 hours per week. This does not include any prep time, which you will not be compensated for. If you signed a one- or two-year contract, please note that you will only work for 10 months but will be paid for twelve. The extra two months of holiday pay is required to be paid to all teachers by law. Make sure that your contract recognizes this fact, and your employer is not trying to stiff you on pay. However, this only applies to one-year contracts (not eight- or nine-month contracts).
Make travel and stay arrangements. Generally, your school will not provide housing or reimbursement for airfare. All travel arrangements must be made on your own. Housing accommodations in Torino normally range in between the €500 to €600 range for a one-bedroom apartment.
Once in Italy, complete additional paperwork to make sure that you are a legal working resident of Italy. Most of these forms will be completed with your employer. This will include a work permit and a tax code. You will need a work permit before you can get the tax code.
