When was the Australian Flag first created?

The Australian flag was first created on 3 September 1901, following a national competition to design a new flag for the newly federated nation.

How was the Australian Flag first created?

The winning design was submitted by Ivor Evans, a 14-year-old schoolboy from Melbourne.

Evans' design featured the Union Jack in the upper left corner, representing Australia's British heritage, and six white stars on a blue background representing the six federated states of Australia.

The Southern Cross constellation was also incorporated into the design, symbolising Australia's location in the Southern Hemisphere.

The new flag was officially adopted on 3 September 1901 and flew for the first time at Government House in Melbourne.
