Indictable offences (more serious offences)
* New South Wales: Maximum penalty of $220,000 and/or 5 years in prison
* Victoria: Maximum penalty of $92,460 and/or 2 years in prison
* Queensland: Maximum penalty of $235,100 and/or 3 years in prison
* South Australia: Maximum penalty of $50,000 and/or 4 years in prison
* Western Australia: Maximum penalty of $50,000 and/or 5 years in prison
* ACT: Maximum penalty of $25,000 and/or 2 years in prison

In addition to these penalties, courts may also order the offender to:
* Pay compensation to the victim
* Undergo counselling or education programs
* Be disqualified from owning or working with animals
