No single European "discovered" the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The land was inhabited and cared for by Indigenous custodians for thousands of years. The first recorded European expedition through the area was led by British explorer Joseph Wild in 1820. Permanent European settlement by graziers began in the 1830s.
