How Perth, Australia Got Its Name

Perth, Western Australia, was named in 1829 by Captain James Stirling, the colony's first governor. He chose Perth to honor Sir George Murray, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, whose parliamentary seat was Perth, Scotland. Stirling's first two name choices were rejected; Perth was his third pick. The Scottish Perth sits on the River Tay, just as the Australian city sits on the Swan River.
