Hedgehogs in Brazil: Not Native, But Introduced Populations Exist

No hedgehog species is native to Brazil. The family Erinaceidae (hedgehogs) is absent from South America's evolutionary history. However, two introduced species have established localized populations.

Introduced Species

How They Arrived

  • Pet Trade: Atelerix albiventris (African Pygmy Hedgehog) popular exotic pet 1990s-2000s. Escapes/releases.
  • Zoo/Research Escapes: Historical (Butantan Institute, etc.)
  • Accidental Transport: Cargo, plant shipments.

Ecological Concerns

  • Predation: Insects, amphibians, reptiles, bird eggs, small mammals. Brazilian fauna naïve to hedgehog predation.
  • Competition: With native insectivores (opossums Didelphis, armadillos, native rodents).
  • Disease: Salmonella, ringworm, parasites — zoonotic risk.
  • Invasive Potential: Atelerix listed as "potential invasive" by Brazilian Ministry of Environment (MMA). Not yet nationally regulated.

Native "Hedgehog-like" Animals

Brazilians often confuse hedgehogs with:

  • Porcupines (Coendou spp.): 15+ species, prehensile tails, arboreal, quills different
  • Spiny Rats (Proechimys, Trinomys): Forest floor, spines not quills
  • Hairy Dwarf Porcupine (Coendou insidiosus): Small, spiny
  • Armadillos: Armored, not spiny

Legal Status

  • IBAMA Normative Instruction 145/2007: Prohibits import/trade of exotic mammals as pets (but enforcement weak).
  • State Laws: São Paulo, Rio, RS restrict exotic pets.
  • If you find one: Don't release. Contact CETAS (Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres) or environmental police.

Brazil has 700+ native mammals. Hedgehogs don't belong—but they're here, in the gardens of the Anthropocene.
