Begin by transferring all liquid, gel, and aerosol toiletry products into 3.4 ounce or smaller containers. If you purchased smaller travel size products, make sure they are no bigger than 3.4 ounces. Remember that containers that are larger than 3.4 ounces, even if they are nearly empty or contain an appropriate amount of product, are still not allowed in your carry on luggage.
Place the 3.4 ounce containers into a quart-sized ziplock, clear plastic bag. Each traveler is allowed this 8' x 7.5' sized bag to put hold their toiletries. Other sized bags, such as gallon size or sandwich size are not allowed, nor are bags without a ziplock.
Certain items are allowed in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces, for the benefit of certain travelers. Still, these products must be in "reasonable" quantities. Such items include baby formula, breast milk or juice for a baby or young child, prescriptions or over-the-counter medicine, or liquids such as water, juice or nutrional gels for passengers with a medical condition. A more extensive list of allowed items is available on the TSA website.
Place the quart-sized ziplock plastic bag that contains your toiletries in a spot that is easily accessible within your carry-on luggage. Since each traveler must remove their ziplock bag from their carry-on to place it separately in a bin for x-ray screening, it is best if it can be reached and removed easily.
