Airline Travel Luggage Restrictions

Airline luggage restrictions are regulated by the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA. The TSA is operated under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and is designed to minimize danger for U.S. flight passengers.
  1. Prohibited Items

    • Most sharp objects, sporting goods, guns and other firearms, explosives and flammable items are strictly prohibited in carry-on baggage. However, if properly wrapped or covered, many of these items are allowed in checked baggage, which goes through a rigorous screening process in airport security lines.

    Luggage

    • The TSA allows all passengers one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase or laptop case. Passengers may also check a large suitcase or bag. Some airlines offer to check the first bag free, while others charge a fee. Check with your preferred airline for its policy on checked baggage.

    Liquids

    • TSA has determined that liquids and gels are safe to bring aboard the airplane, in limited quantities. For carry-on luggage, liquids must not exceed 3.4 oz., or 100 milliliters. They must be sealed within a 1-quart clear plastic zip-top bag; each passenger is limited to one 1-quart bag.
