Airline Luggage Content Restrictions

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has set restrictions for luggage contents to improve passenger safety. While there is a standardized list of prohibited items, TSA officers may expand the list at their own discretion.
  1. Carry-on Luggage

    • Liquids, such as soaps, are restricted to 3 oz.-sized bottles that will fit in one, one-quart-sized zip-lock bag. All items that can be used as weapons, including firearms, bows and arrows, knives, razors and scissors, sticks or clubs, such as baseball bats and golf clubs, and tools like hammers are prohibited. Flammable materials such as matches, lighters, explosive devices, aerosol can, flammable or toxic liquids, like lighter fluid or bleach, and any gel-like substances, such as shoe insoles or candles also are prohibited.

    Checked Luggage

    • Any type of explosive device, including flares, gunpowder and dynamite, or replicas thereof, and flammable liquids, including paint, strike-anywhere matches and vehicle airbags are all prohibited in checked baggage.

    Special Items

    • Firearms must be placed in hard-sided, locked containers and declared at check-in. Ammunition must be placed in a cardboard or wooden box or a case specifically designed to carry ammunition. Neither gunpowder nor percussion caps, such as those used for muzzleloaders, are permitted on planes.
