Luggage Restrictions on Domestic Flights

Luggage restrictions on domestic flights vary between airlines. A passenger may be charged additional fees for exceeding the airlines' baggage restriction policies. Airline policies and fees are subject to change, at the company's discretion.
  1. Checked Luggage

    • Generally, the first piece of luggage cannot be larger than 62 inches in overall dimensions. The luggage is measured length, plus width, plus height. The second and third pieces of luggage can be restricted to 55 inches and 45 inches in overall dimensions, respectively. Weight restrictions vary from 50 pounds to 70 pounds.

    Carry-On Luggage

    • Carry-on luggage must be small enough to fit in the overhead compartment or beneath the passenger's seat. Most domestic airlines restrict the luggage to 45 linear inches in total dimension; weight is generally limited to 40 pounds.

    Limits

    • Most airlines limit economy class passengers to one piece of carry-on luggage and two pieces of checked baggage. Some airlines allow for three pieces checked in luggage.

    Additional Charges

    • Airlines charge additional fees for luggage that is oversize and/or overweight. Additional pieces of luggage above the maximum limit are also assessed an additional charge.
