Is a Tasmanian Devil a Decomposer?
No. Tasmanian devils are carnivorous marsupials (scavengers/predators), not decomposers.
- Decomposers (bacteria, fungi, invertebrates) break down dead organic matter chemically.
- Devils consume carrion (and live prey) mechanically with powerful jaws and teeth, digesting it internally. They are consumers (scavengers/carnivores) in the food web.
Their ecological role is scavenging—cleaning up carcasses—but they do not decompose tissue externally.
