Conservation Status of the Tasmanian Devil: Endangered
The Tasmanian devil is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (since 2008). Primary threats:
- Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD): Contagious cancer causing facial tumors, starvation. >80% population decline since 1996.
- Habitat loss: Logging, agriculture, development.
- Roadkill: Significant mortality factor (see above).
- Historical persecution: Hunting for fur/perceived livestock threat.
Conservation actions: Captive breeding (insurance populations), DFTD vaccine research, wild monitoring, habitat protection, road mitigation, Maria Island translocation.
Recovery hinges on managing DFTD and securing wild habitat.
