How Australia Chooses Its Prime Minister

Australia has no direct popular vote for Prime Minister. The process:

  1. Voters elect members of the House of Representatives (151 seats).
  2. The Governor-General (King's representative) commissions the leader of the party/coalition that commands a majority in the House to form government.
  3. That leader becomes Prime Minister.

In practice, the PM is the leader of the winning party (Labor, Liberal/National Coalition). Party members choose the leader via internal ballot. If a PM loses party leadership, they lose the premiership without an election (e.g., Rudd→Gillard→Rudd, Abbott→Turnbull→Morrison).
