Tasmania's wilderness is protected in several World Heritage and national park areas:

  • West: Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers (World Heritage), Walls of Jerusalem, Hartz Mountains.
  • Central Highlands: Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair (World Heritage), Walls of Jerusalem.
  • Central/East: Maria Island (national park, historic, wildlife).
  • Northeast: Ben Lomond, Douglas-Apsley, Mt William.
  • North: Narawntapu (coastal heath, wildlife).

Over 40% of Tasmania is protected. The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (1.58M ha) is one of Earth's last great temperate wildernesses.
