Information on the Australian Outback

The outback is a dry desert region of Australia that is about two-thirds the size of the continental United-States. Its population is fewer than a million people, or one person every two square mile. The best time to visit is between April and November; when the temperature is at its lowest.
  1. Wildlife

    • The outback has a very diverse group of animals that make up its environment. These include dingoes, kangaroos, crocodiles, snakes, spiders, lizards, and even camels.

    Landscape

    • The outback's landscape ranges from peninsulas to rocky deserts. Some of these include the Sturt Stony Desert and the Simpson Desert, as well wide salt lakes that are sometimes filled with water.

    Major Cities

    • Only a few major cities and towns can be found in the outback: Darwin, Alice Springs, Yulara and Coober Pedy. Darwin, the biggest of these cities, mixes city life with the dryness of the outback. A growing frontier town located on the coast, Darwin's population mixes more than 50 nationalities.
