What do the different types of government in Australia do?

Australia is a federation, which means it is governed by three levels of government: the federal government, the state and territory governments, and the local governments.

The federal government is responsible for matters that affect the whole of Australia, such as foreign policy, trade, defence, immigration, currency, and taxation. The federal government is also responsible for some social welfare programs, such as pensions and unemployment benefits.

The state and territory governments are responsible for matters that affect their respective states or territories, such as education, health, housing, transport, and policing. The state and territory governments also have some responsibility for environmental protection and natural resources management.

The local governments are responsible for matters that affect their local communities, such as roads, footpaths, libraries, parks, and swimming pools. The local governments also have some responsibility for planning and development control.

Each level of government has its own powers and responsibilities, and all of the levels of government work together to provide the services that Australians need.
