Experienced spelunkers and the mildly curious can find appealing options for underground adventure. Two of the region's popular, striking and easily accessible caves are Cathedral Caverns State Park and Russell Cave National Monument. Cathedral Caverns State Park offers guided tours seven days a week, and guides boast that it has the largest cave opening east of the Mississippi. Russell Cave is best known for its evidence of prehistoric peoples dating 6500 B.C. to A.D. 1650.

Little Nashville is close to one of the region's most beautiful hikes. Walls of Jericho is located in northern Jackson County on the Alabama-Tennessee border. Reaching the dramatic waterfall and limestone amphitheater requires a 3.5 mile one-way hike that is moderate to difficult. When water levels are favorably high, a pool at the bottom of the falls is sometimes used as a swimming hole.
