Flying High Bird Habitat

Flying High Flora and Fauna Bird Habitat, or Flying High Bird Habitat for short, is a giant, free-flight aviary located along the Harvey Coast in Apple Tree Creek, Queensland, Australia. The attraction is self-guided and features more than 2,000 indigenous and exotic birds. As the largest walk-through aviary in Australia, this is a must-see attraction for people visiting the Harvey Coast area.
  1. Habitat

    • The habitat enclosure covers an area of two acres and is filled with natural rainforest and Australian flora, as well as a mix of flora from other areas to which some birds are native. The top of the netted enclosure measures 7 meters (roughly 23 feet) high; most birds are free within this enclosure, although some do not get along and must be kept in separate cages. There are 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet) worth of walking track throughout the aviary, and at least 30 minutes should be allowed to explore all of it. Birds often can be spotted at one of the many feeding stations throughout the habitat.

    Birds

    • Many of the more than 2,000 birds in the Flying High Bird Habitat are colorful Australian parrots and finches, and there also are many different African and Asian finches. Relatively new to the aviary are 10 South American macaws comprising four specific species: Blue and Golds, Greenwings, Scarlets and a single Catalina.

    Concept

    • Flying High Flora and Fauna Bird Habitat was conceptualized, designed and built by John Woodall. Woodall is an ex-farmer who always has been interested in birds and birdwatching.

    Cost

    • Cost of admission was $18 Australian (AUD) in 2009, which converted to roughly $16.80 American (USD) that year.

    Hours of Operation

    • The Flying High Bird Habitat is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The habitat is open all days of the year except Dec. 24, 25 and 31.

    Accommodations

    • Flying High accommodations include car parking, public restrooms, a sheltered gathering area and coach parking. The habitat is also wheelchair-accessible with restroom facilities for the disabled and assistance for the disabled available. In addition, it offers numerous benches and viewing areas.
