How are the schools organized in Newfoundland?

Education System:

Newfoundland and Labrador has a centralized education system, meaning that the provincial government is responsible for education from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The school year generally runs from September to June.

Kindergarten:

Kindergarten programs are available for children aged 4-5 years old and are offered full-time, half-time, or on a part-time basis. Kindergarten is not compulsory but is strongly encouraged as it provides a foundation for future learning.

Primary School (Elementary):

Primary school encompasses Grades 1 to 6 and typically starts at age 6. Students learn core subjects such as English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education.

Junior High School (Intermediate):

Junior high school covers Grades 7 to 9 and may be housed within an elementary or high school building. Students continue their core subjects and begin exploring elective options.

Senior High School (Secondary):

Senior high school spans Grades 10 to 12. Students complete a compulsory core curriculum, including English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, as well as electives of their choice. Career-focused programs and college preparatory courses may be available.

School Boards:

Newfoundland and Labrador has seven regional school boards:

1. Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD)

2. Newfoundland and Labrador French School District (CSNL)

3. Western Avalon Catholic School Board (WACS)

4. English School District of Lewisporte (ESDL)

5. Eastern School District (ESD)

6. Conseil Scolaire Francophone Provincial de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador (CSFP)

7. Labrador School District (LSD)

Each board is responsible for managing the schools in its designated region, including curriculum implementation, teacher hiring, and facility maintenance.

Post-Secondary Education:

Newfoundland and Labrador has several public colleges and the Memorial University of Newfoundland, which is the province's primary university. There are also trade schools and career colleges offering specialized training programs.
