Communities of the Yukon Territory: From Whitehorse to Old Crow
The Yukon Territory's ~42,000 residents live in a handful of communities scattered across 482,000 km². The capital, Whitehorse (~28,000), holds two-thirds of the population. Other notable settlements:
- Dawson City (~1,500): Klondike Gold Rush heart; historic architecture.
- Watson Lake (~1,500): Alaska Highway junction; famous Sign Post Forest.
- Haines Junction (~600): Gateway to Kluane National Park.
- Carcross (~300): Tlingit culture; Carcross Desert (world's smallest).
- Faro (~400): Former zinc-lead mine town.
- Ross River, Pelly Crossing, Mayo, Old Crow: Predominantly First Nations (Kaska, Northern Tutchone, Gwich'in); fly-in or seasonal road access.
- Beaver Creek, Burwash Landing, Carmacks, Elsa, Tagish, Upper Liard: Small, often highway-service or indigenous communities.
Many "communities" are unincorporated settlements or highway lodges. Old Crow (Gwich'in, ~250) is the only Yukon community north of the Arctic Circle—accessible only by air. Population figures are approximate (2021 Census); seasonal variation is significant.
