Bicycle Helmets
- Every person under 18 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet when riding on a road.
- Helmets must be approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or another recognized safety organization.
- Helmets must be properly fitted and fastened.
Bicycles Equipped with Lights and Reflectors
- Every bicycle must be equipped with:
- A front white light
- A red rear reflector
- Amber pedal reflectors
Riding a Bicycle on a Road
- Cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Cyclists must ride as close to the right-hand edge of the road as is safe.
- Cyclists are not permitted to ride on sidewalks.
- Cyclists must stop for stop signs and red lights.
- Cyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and vehicles.
Cycling in a Bike Lane
- Cyclists must use a bike lane when it is available.
- Cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic in a bike lane.
- Cyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in a bike lane.
Passing Other Cyclists
- Cyclists must pass other cyclists on the left.
- Cyclists must give an audible warning before passing another cyclist.
- Cyclists must not pass another cyclist in a crosswalk.
- Cyclists can only pass another cyclist in the same lane
Riding Two Abreast
- Cyclists may ride two abreast on a road.
- Cyclists may not ride two abreast in a bike lane.
Carrying Passengers
- Cyclists are not permitted to carry passengers on a bicycle that is not designed to carry passengers.
- Cyclists must not carry passengers in a manner that is unsafe.
Penalties for Violating Bicycle Laws
- Violating any of the bicycle laws listed above can result in a fine.
- The maximum fine for violating a bicycle law is $500.
