The Origin of Toronto's Nickname 'Hogtown'

Toronto earned the nickname "Hogtown" (also "Porkopolis") in the mid-19th century when it was a major center for pig farming and pork processing. Its stockyards and slaughterhouses produced vast quantities of pork products.
