How did Quebec City get its name?

The name "Québec" is thought to originate from an Algonquian word meaning "where the river narrows". The city was originally called "Stadaconé" by indigenous locals, but French explorer Jacques Cartier referred to it as "Québec" in his 1535 account. The name stuck and the city was subsequently named "Québec" by French colonists.
