Places to See in Old Quebec City

Historic Quebec City rests at the peak of Cap Diamant along the St. Lawrence River banks. The city was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain. Citizens continue to honor the city's French roots through their language and culture. Old Quebec City's cobblestone streets--and 17th century stone houses and shops--invite visitors to step back into the past and experience Old World European charm in North America.
  1. Fortifications of Quebec National Historic Site of Canada

    • The fortifications surrounding Quebec City provide an imposing view and constant reminder of the city's militaristic history. The fortified walls date back to the 17th century. You can walk along the 2.9-mile long rampart and visit the restored Esplanade Powder Magazine.

Although the fortifications can be seen at any time, the visitor center and guided tours are available only at certain times. As of 2009, the visitor center is open daily through October 12. Reservations are required to visit after this date. During 2009, ninety-minute guided walking tours are available from the beginning of June through October 12.

    Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica Cathedral

    • Stunning stained glass windows and treasures--including a sanctuary lamp from King Louis IV--give the Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica Cathedral architectural and historical--as well as religious--significance. The present cathedral dates back to 1923. The original cathedral was built in 1647 and destroyed in the English Conquest of 1759. Its replacement burned down in 1922.

Other points of interest at the cathedral include the crypt, where former governors of New France and bishops are buried. The cathedral is open daily all year round for free self-guided tours. One-hour guided group tours of the cathedral and crypt are offered daily from the beginning of May through the end of October for a fee.
