Jump on board a Port Stanley Terminal Rail Train for an exciting ride back through time on diesel locomotives from the 1940s and 50s. The historic station is located next to the King George lift bridge (a must-see). Trains operate on a private right of way that extends northwards following the scenic Kettle Creek valley with a series of woodsy views. The ride is comfortable with some beautiful scenery and fascinating historical lore courtesy of the train guides. Find up-to-date train schedules and a list of special event trains operating during the year on line. One of the most popular is the Murder Mystery trains that use the 1937 coaches. The plots are played out by the "Who Dunnit Players."
Looking for real peace and tranquility? Port Stanley beaches are for you! Stretch out and just relax on the picturesque Port Stanley Main Beach or head to the Port Stanley Little Beach. Both are beautiful sandy beaches that the county cleans every morning and also bans dogs to help ensure that they stay that way throughout the summer. Or if you enjoy sitting by the water, a large active harbor extends into the heart of the village where you can watch fishing boats quietly leave port as hundreds of seagulls flutter overhead. Another option: Board a sailboat at the "very friendly" Kettle Creek Marina located in the heart of Port Stanley, where there is always something to do.
Browse the chic shops and stores on Main Street, within a few minutes' walk of the bay. Many of its historic buildings are now home to a variety of charming shops, galleries, and restaurants. Stop in Artsy Girl for a fabulous selection of handcrafted gifts. You'll find Port Stanley a charming harbor village with a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. In fact, everyone is friendly in Port Stanley---from locals to waitresses, to bartenders, and to the store owners, who casually greet you but don't try to pressure sales.
Feast on some just-caught seafood. Have dinner at any restaurant and you’ll notice the menus all feature catch-of-the-day fish. Port Stanley’s is a commercial fishing community, well known for its perch, pickerel, smelt and bass. You'll find perch platter, pan-fried perch, perch dinner, perch and steak combo all on the regular menu at the Bridge Dining Lounge. For a great desert, head to Brodericks for some real old-fashioned ice cream, or try a homemade waffle cone. Wander around the area and perhaps catch a show at the Grand Theatre before retiring at one of the local bed and breakfasts.
Enjoy the tranquility of Port Stanley---from watching the sun go down slowly in the western sky---to chatting with the locals to simply walking down the street breathing in the fresh air coming off the lake. If you visit in early August you'll get in a party mood when the village hosts its annual Calypso celebration. The party kicks into high gear Friday night on Main Beach with Polynesian dancers, music and a variety of activities. If your kids are along for the fun, they'll enjoy the spectacular fireworks that light up the sky throughout the weekend.
