How to Visit Windsor, Ontario

Windsor, located across the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit, is the only place where Canada is south of the United States. This friendly town offers a plethora of activities, from casino gambling to duty-free shopping, historic sites to manicured parks. What's more: Your U.S. dollars go farther in Canada.

      Get a passport. U.S. citizens are now required to have a valid passport for travel to Canada. If you don't have one, you can apply at one of 8000 passport offices around the world. You'll need proof of citizenship, two passport-size photos, the completed application and the passport fee. Allow four to six weeks for processing.

      Try your luck at Casino Windsor. Located at the waterfront overlooking downtown Detroit, this casino was one of the region's first casinos. The 22-story hotel-casino has a 100,000-square foot gaming floor as well as multiple restaurants, a sports bar and a show lounge.

      Tour the Canadian Club distillery. The Canadian Club Distillery in Windsor offers tours of their facility from May through December. The one-hour tour includes a visit to the company's turn-of-the-century, Italianate headquarters building, a film about whiskey processing and a chance to sample Canadian Club products. The distillery is located one-half mile from the bridge, and no reservations are necessary.

      Stroll along the Detroit River. Windsor boasts three miles of landscaped biking and hiking trails along the Detroit River, all with a spectacular view of the Detroit skyline.

      Visit the John Freeman Walls Historic Site. The John Freeman Walls farm was the end point for the many thousands of slaves who traveled the Underground Railroad from ports throughout the Great Lakes. Today, the site, located about 30 minutes from the border, welcomes visitors from June through August.
