How to See the Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede, held in Calgary each July, is a combination of a state fair and a Wild West show. The ten-day event, which began in 1912, features rodeo events, live entertainment, live stock demonstrations, shopping and midway rides. The Stampede draws over one million visitors each year.

      Plan a trip to Calgary Alberta in July. The Stampede is held for ten days each year during the second week in July. Most events are held at Stampede Grounds, on the southeast side of the city.

      Purchase tickets. Tickets to Stampede events are available online, via phone or in person. Children under 17 receive a discount and children two and under are free.

      Attend one of the rodeo events. The Calgary Stampede Rodeo, with a total purse of $1.75 million, is the richest rodeo in the world. Events include bareback, bull riding, steer wrestling and tie-down roping.

      Dress in western gear. Everyone in Calgary is a cowboy (or cowgirl) for the Stampede. Bring your cowboy hat and boots and you'll fit right in.

      Watch the parade. One of the highlights of the Calgary Stampede is the opening day parade. The event travels a 4.5 mile route through downtown Calgary and draws more than 350,000 spectators each year.

      Marvel at the midway. The Calgary Stampede midway features over 30 carnival rides, including many rides for small children. Favorites include the fun house, the traditional merry-go-round and the spinning coaster.

      Enjoy the live entertainment. The Stampede features live entertainment on three stages, all included with one admission. Hear everything from pop music to country ballads.
