How to Ship a Gift to Canada

Mailing a gift to Canada is not quite as easy as wrapping a package, slapping on a mailing label and shipping it off to a U.S. destination. International shipping rules have gotten very strict and can make your trip to the post office a real hassle if you don't know all the rules. Incorrect mailing information and labeling also could cause your package to be returned to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack your gift well in a sturdy box. Print the full and complete address, including Canada, in a bold spot on the top of the package.

    • 2

Print the zip code carefully. Canadian zip codes, unlike American zips, are a combination of letters and numbers.

    • 3

Fill out an international shipping label that includes the contents and its value. It is difficult to surprise a Canadian gift recipient because you must write what is in the package on the label. You don't have to give details though. For example, you can write "statue," but you don't have to put "angel statue."

Go online at webapps.usps.com/customsforms/ to download the form. Then print this label before heading off to the post office.

Utilize a service such as FedEx, which can ship to Canada at ground rates. They will pick the package up at your home or office, and the delivery folks are very helpful about filling out labels.
